LIVE UPDATES

from the

2008 "BELLEVILLE MIDGET NATIONALS"
Saturday, August 2 UPDATES
Windy and hot, hot, hot!  That's the summary for today so far!  I haven't remembered too
many years here at Belleville when it's been this windy every day.  That, combined with
the intense heat, makes keeping a good race track surface a bit of a chore.  Last night
was proof of that as the track never threw any mud into the stands (many years this
happens all night long), and the fans got covered in dust from the beginning.  The racing
was good, but not great.  Plenty fast track, but there was not much passing.  The cushion
was edging closer to the fence, which would have made it much more interesting, but
ended up about five feet off.  Bobby East was a rocket, although a called-back start for
Davey Ray (in the Fike #32), which looked perfectly good to everyone who saw it, nixed
any chance he had at leading the race as the final green flag gave the edge to East, who
never looked back.

With only 31 cars in the pits, and nothing extra to fill the time during races, the night got
over as early as I've ever remembered - by about 10:30 pm.  Part of the reason for that
was that there were few yellows - no accidents and only one car stopped on track.  Quite
a few cars pulled off with what looked like motor issues, so we'll have to see if everyone
makes it back for tonight's show.

After a huge amount of race fans showed up for the All Stars race on Thursday, I was
really surprised to see a sparce crowd for the opening night of the Nationals on Friday -
lots of empty seats.   Not sure where all of the winged fans went, but they sure didn't want
to see the Midget show last night.

If you read yesterday's notes, I was lamenting the fact that all of the traditional elements to
this race week - autograph sessions, softball game, draw at the courthouse, etc. - have
been eliminated.  Well, I've got one more to add to the list of missing fun stuff - NO HIGH
SCHOOL BAND in the grandstands entertaining us before and during the event.  The
sounds of that band on race nights were part of this event, and something I've looked
forward to each year.  I have no idea why they weren't invited back, but it's a shame, no
matter what the reason.
