INDIANAPOLIS 500

RACE DAY
Sunday, May 24 UPDATES
9:00 AM
WELCOME TO INDIANAPOLIS 500-MILE RACE DAY 2009!  What a great month it has
been, and I expect that today's race will only make this one of the most
memorable May events ever.

If traffic at 5:00 AM, when I attempted to get into the track via the credential
gate, is any indication, I'd say this race is truly "back" - it was the worst (or best,
depending on how you look at it) that I've ever seen...especially at that ungodly
hour.  Most race days, I simply cruise down 25th street and drive directly into
the track.  Today, it was a LONG and frustrating wait, for sure.  But I guess that's
good news for the track and the IRL, as the fans have come out in masses for
this event all month long.

Beautiful day here so far, but there's about a 30% chance of showers,
unfortunately beginning at 1:00 PM - the exact start of the race.

Saw a very relaxed Townsend Bell strolling unnoticed through the garage area
at around 8:00 AM, as well as a bicycle-riding Alex Tagliani.  It was pretty early to
see drivers up and around - they usually take the first part of the AM to spend
time with their families and grab some healthy food before their very long day
starts (kicking off with masses of media interviews as soon as they open the
door to their bus).

I always take time to think about how this day, this race, will profoundly affect so
many people by the end of the afternoon.  Someone's life will be forever
changed.  Some drivers will have a good day, that may launch a long career.
Some drivers may have a horrible day, or worse, crash out of the race, which
may change things for them in their life in a negative way.  What will the story be
today?

Media is buzzing, the garage area is buzzing, the Pagoda Plaza is buzzing - can
you tell that I think there's a distinct "buzz" in the air today?  That's notable, as
there have been many recent years where there was no noticeable excitement
this early on race day morning.

For the most part, today is a day for pictures - there's not much that can be
written about this spectacular event that you won't see on TV.
