2010 INDIANAPOLIS 500 LIVE UPDATES Sunday, May 23, 2010 BUMP DAY
|

10:00 AM
Weather is steamy hot, clear, without a cloud in the sky! Going to be a great
Bump Day!
Lots of people streaming into the track, but not as many as Pole Day. Think most
will try to make it out for the end of the day when bumping drama ensues.
By all accounts, yesterday's revamped Pole Day activities were a hit with the
fans, as most everyone says that they haven't seen a crowd like that in years
and years. The perfect weather sure helped. A bit of the drama was taken out
of the day by eventual Pole winner Helio Castroneves' HUGE number put up
right off the bat, but that aside, it was fun to watch.
The Media Center inhabitants were shocked to see Tony Kanaan once again
crash this morning. We all thought we were watching a replay of yesterday's
accident. He crashed during his qualifying lap yesterday, smashing his primary
machine, and today's casualty is his backup car. Both appeared to be driver
error, SO rare for him. His bad luck here at the Speedway continues. Maybe
he's getting it out of his system, leaving smooth, problem-free racing for Race
Day.
12:00 PM
I am having a lot of trouble uploading anything at all to this site, but especially
photos. I'll try to get caught up from this weekend as soon as I can resolve the
issue.
Nine spots are left before bumping begins today. As of right now, there are 13
drivers vying for those spots, with four bumps possible.
Looks like all drivers not qualified yesterday will go out right away and try to
stick their car in the field, with John Andretti first in line.
1:00 PM
Ten drivers made qualification attempts right off the bat today, with Jay Howard
going last, bumping slowest-to-that-point Takuma Sato.
Nice but somewhat subdued crowd here today.
It's Armed Forces Day here at IMS today - lots of uniformed heroes walking
around.
Couple of big driver developments - something we didn't think we'd see this
year: Bruno "Ironman" Junqueira, with only a few practice laps this morning,
hopped in a FAZZT machine as teammate to super-fast Alex Tagliani (qualified
P5), and stuck it in the show at 225.662 - simply amazing, considering how many
drivers have spent the week here running laps and laps and laps and are still
having trouble getting to 224 mph. The second shocking development is the
firing of AJ Foyt IV by his grandpa, replaced by Jaques Lazier. Rumors have it
that IV didn't quite show as much love to his car as he should, and grandpa
didn't like his attitude, so he told him to leave the garage area. So much for
family ties...
2:00 PM
Bump Day Word of the Day: HOTTTTTTTT!
Tony Kanaan and his amazing crew are now on track practicing in a patched-up
car, resurrected from his AM practice crash.
Expecting practice to last most of the afternoon in these hot conditions, with
the usual drama of bumping resuming after 4 PM sometime. No use going out
now - better to wait to see if things cool off a bit, or a random cloud wants to
float by to cast a small shadow over the track.
Once qualifications start again, the next in line to be bumped is Sebastian
Saavedra at 223.634 mph.
One of the few veteran drivers still walking around IMS is Oriol Servia. I spoke
with him about any offers to jump in a struggling car, and he said "no news."
But I expect that could change as desperation, and the 6:00 PM gun, creeps
closer.
