5:00 pm
2006 MotoGP World Champion Nicky Hayden is planning to attend th
100th Anniversary Indianapolis 500.

Fifteen-time Full Throttle NHRA Funny Car champion John Force is
bringing the John Force Road Show to the Indianapolis 500 this
weekend.  The John Force Road Show will be open during normal
spectator viewing times and will be positioned at the corner of 16th
Avenue and Georgetown Road across from the IMS Administration
Building.  The Road Show is designed to educated fans about all forms of
racing.  The John Force Road Show will consist of two 18-wheelers with
dual-side awnings.  Under the "big tops" will be a variety of John Force
Racing Funny Cars as well as video screens showing race footage.  Plans
are in the works to add representative race cars from NASCAR and
INDYCAR.

The 1989 Indianapolis 500 Chase co-Rookie of the Year Scott Pruett and
his wife, Judy, will present a Magnum bottle of their Pruett Indy 500 wine,
showcased in a lacquered, etched wooden box, to each of the 33 qualified
team owners for the 100th Anniversary Indianapolis 500.  GRAND-AM
sports car champion Pruett also is the vinter of Pruett Vinyard.

4:45 pm
Just spent the afternoon trying to interview as many of the 33 qualified
drivers as possible (couldn't get to all of them).  Will be posting notes from
those interviews over the next few days.

Firstone Indy Lights activities were cancelled for today.  The field will line
up by owner's points, and will have - weather permitting - a 30-minute
practice in the morning starting at 9:00 AM.

2010 USAC National Drivers Champion Bryan Clauson will start from the
Pole of the Firestone Freedom 100 on Friday in his first career start.
Clauson, the 2010 USAC National Midget Series champion, is on the inside
of the front row because his #77 Mazda Road to Indy/Curb Records/SSM
car leads the entrant points.  Conor Daly drove the car in the first three
races of the season, which were on road/street courses.  Clauson is
driving the car in the six oval races of the 2011 Firestone Indy Lights
season.

Qualifying results for the Firestone Freedom 100 Firestone Indy Lights
event on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with starting position,
car number in parentheses, driver. Lineup set by entrant points after
qualifications were cancelled due to rain.

1. (77) Bryan Clauson, entrant points
2. (11) Josef Newgarden, entrant points
3. (5) Stefan Wilson, entrant points
4. (22) Victor Garcia, entrant points
5. (7) Esteban Guerrieri, entrant points
6. (36) Peter Dempsey, entrant points
7. (63) Mikael Grenier, entrant points
8. (9) Anders Krohn, entrant points
9. (16) David Ostella, entrant points
10. (4) Jorge Goncalvez, entrant points
11. (26) James Winslow, entrant points
12. (2) Gustavo Yacaman, entrant points
13. (3) Victor Carbone, entrant points
14. (28) Duarte Ferreira, entrant points
15. (12) Juan Pablo Garcia, entrant points
16. (17) Rusty Mitchell, entrant points
17. (75) Chase Austin, entrant points
18. (32) Brandon Wagner, entrant points

Not a big photo day, as it rained the whole time.  Will post what I have from
the Media Day activities (not a lot, as I was writing more than taking pics).

And yes...it's still raining (sigh)...

1:15 pm
Announcement just made here in the Media Center about the remainder of
the Indy Lights schedule for today.  Qualifications are now a priority,
meaning, if there's any dry track time, they'll go right to qualifications and
not practice anymore today.  The final practice for the Indy Lights is now
scheduled for 9-9:30 AM tomorrow.  If qualifications get rained out
today/tomorrow, the lineup for the race will be set by entrant points.

12:30 pm
Entry updates:
Ryan Hunter-Reay has replaced Bruno Junqueira as the driver of the No.
41 A.J. Foyt Enterprises entry.  The entry has been renamed ABC
Supply/DHL/Sun Drop.  Hunter-Reay will start 33rd due to the driver
change.  Junqueira qualified the car 19th on Pole Day, Saturday, May 21;
The No. 44 Panther Racing entry driven by Buddy Rice has been renamed
Fuzzy's Vodka/Panther Racing;
The No. 5 KV Racing Technology-Lotus entry driven by Takuma Sato has
been renamed Monavie-KVRT-Lotus.

It's Media Day at IMS today.  Media will have their last opportunity to
interview all 33 drivers participating in the 100th Anniversary Indianapolis
500 this afternoon at IMS.

12:00 pm
Massive and violent storms plagued the entire Indianapolis area overnight,
making me feel sorry for the thousands of campers descending on
various campgrounds around the track for this weekend's activities.  Rain
continues to fall at the speedway today.  Temps are pleasant - probably
mid-70s.  However, radar does not look good for the rest of the day.

Tonight's "Tony Hulman Classic" USAC National Sprint Car race at the
Terre Haute (IN) Action track has been cancelled due to torrential rains
over the past 24 hours.  USAC will try to reschedule.

Later today there will be a press conference announcing that Indy
500-qualified drivers Tony Kanaan and Vitor Meira will both run in the
legendary Ironman Triathlon - very cool.  Who says race car drivers aren't
athletes!!

11:00 am
Rain, rain and more rain - the biggest story of the month!

Firestone Indy Lights early morning practice was delayed by the rain, but
they eventually got about 20 minutes in.  Top five drivers/speeds:
1) Stefan Wilson - 189.958
2) Duarte Ferreira - 188.993
3) Josef Newgarden - 188.627
4) Bryan Clauson - 188.599
5) James Winslow - 188.416

The Indy Lights practice/qualifying schedule is up in the air for now, as
rain continues to fall at IMS.  20 minutes is not enough for these drivers on
this treacherous oval (although most participated in a testing session here
a few weeks ago).
