MONTH OF MAY - INDIANAPOLIS 500
2012
LIVE UPDATES
SUNDAY, MAY 20 UPDATES - "BUMP DAY"

Sunday Photos

Sunday/Armed Forces Day/Bump Day Schedule Highlights
$15
Kids 12 and under free.
8 a.m. - 6 p.m.  --  Public Gates Open
Noon  --  Qualifications Begin

INDIANAPOLIS 500 QUALIFYING PROCEDURES

Order - A blind draw is conducted before each qualifying day.
Warm-up laps - Each car is permitted two warm-up laps before the timed
qualification laps.  IZOD IndyCar Series officials may permit three warm-up
laps if they deem it necessary.
Green-flag laps - A qualification attempt consists of four timed laps.  The
aggregate time is recorded as the official qualifying time for the car.

POLE DAY:
Qualifying is broken down into two segments, progressively  narrowing
the field to determine the pole winner.

Segment One - Held from 11AM-4PM, to determine positions 1-24 in the
field based on the fastest four-lap averages.  Once all 24 positions have
been filled, bumping will occur until 4PM.  Each car has up to three
qualifying attempts.  The top nine qualifiers advance to Segment Two.
Segment Two - Held from 4:30-6PM, the top nine cars will run in reverse
order based on Segment One speeds.  All cars are required to make at
least one attempt in Segment Two.  Cars making additional attempts will
receive and additional set of tires.  At the end of the session, the cars are
ranked 1-9 based on their four-lap average during the segment.

BUMP DAY:
Positions 25-33 will be determined based on the day's fastest four-lap
average.  Once starting field is set, any qualifying attempt that is faster than
a qualified entrant in the starting field will bump the slowest qualifier,
regardless of the day of qualification.  The "bumping" entrant is placed at
the rear of the field while the "bumped" entrant is removed from the field,
but has the opportunity to bump its way back into the starting field as time
allows.  Each car is allowed three attempts.

4:00 PM
Over 100 photos posted from late yesterday and today!  Check them out!

Lots and lots and lots of laps being run this afternoon, in what could be
hot and humid race conditions.  Most teams changed over their cars to
race-day setups, as practice laps on Carb Day could be limited due to
weather.

Heard 10 teams were fined $50,000 each for doing something to their
brakes for their qualifying runs yesterday which would take the drag out of
the car (forcing the driver to pump the brakes 12 times in order to get them
to function properly).  The issue was fixed once found, but one of the
teams had a new driver to IMS who was totally unaware that this was
happening, which could have resulted in disaster should he have needed
to use his brakes in a hurry.

Track emptied out in a hurry when the Pacers vs. Heat b-ball game started -
this is a big basketball town!  Especially since there's no real drama
expected here this afternoon, and it's extremely hot and humid here (sticky
and uncomfortable).

Indianapolis 500 veteran Jay Howard will serve as a social media
correspondent (who would have thought a few years ago that that term
would exist?) for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Race Day,
interacting with fans through his Twitter account, @JayHowardRacing.
Too bad Jay didn't get anything put together for the race this year.  He was
told he had an engine and the pick of one of two available cars.  Told his
family in England, who bought airline tickets to the U.S., invested in other
things, then was told he would not have that opportunity.  Boo to
whomever allowed that to fall through!

A band-aid decal was placed across a seam between body parts on the
#39 car of Bryan Clauson as a symbol of the work Sarah Fisher Hartman
Racing completed to rebuild the car after Clauson crashed Saturday in
qualifying.

Don't forget...track is closed for the next two days, so don't expect any
updates until Wednesday (Community Day) as I don't plan on being here
after an exhausting week.

3:00 PM
Welcome to Indy 500 Bump Day...a little late (sorry)!  This is one Bump Day
that does not expect to see much exciting action, other than the addition of
the final 9 cars to the field, which happened relatively early this afternoon.
The two Lotus-powered cars piloted by Simona de Silvestro and Jean
Alesi both qualified, but at more than 8-12 mph slower than the rest of the
field.

Depending on whom you speak with, there will be no one attempting to
bump out any of the slowest cars later this afternoon.  But then again,
there's always those pesky rumors that AJ will pull another car out (at the
request of the Hulman family) and spice up the end of the day (and TV
coverage - boy, they have a lot of time to kill this afternoon).

To bad to see Charlie Kimball crash this afternoon (he's OK).  He has had a
great month.  See my picture section from today for a humorous section
with Charlie playing with the Firestone Firehawk mascot and their t-shirt
shooting machine - very funny!  His crash came about 15 minutes after I
shot those photos, bringing the reality of how quickly a driver's day can
change here at IMS.

The biggest cheer of the day was reserved for USAC National Driving
Champion Bryan Clauson, who has a LOT of fans here at IMS (me included
- as you might guess by the amount of photos).  Aside from his crash
yesterday, he's had a storybook month of May, and he deserves to be in
this race.  They stuck him in on a somewhat conservative 4-lap run - no
need to push it today, as they don't have another spare car.  He's happy to
be in, and is looking forward to the famous and funny Last Row Party!
