7:00 AM
RACE DAY!  It's here and I'm ready for it!

It's hard to describe how much anticipation goes into this one day for
everyone who's been involved with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway all
month.  On one hand, it's a long month, and you are dead tired (and in
some ways want life to get back to normal).  But mostly, it's the most
exhilarating feeling being here every day, and to know that today
someone's life will change forever (and that I'm going to watch it happen) -
it's just incredible.

I always go into a bit of a depressed mood the evening after the race, and
for the days to follow.  It's hard to believe that just hours/days ago, you
were a part of this race day, and one of almost a half-million people who
witnessed this spectacle in person (and  it's equally hard to believe that
just hours after the race, the grounds are basically empty).  The ebb and
flow of today is like no other day in any capacity - from the bomb going off
at 5:33AM, to watching the sun come up, to seeing the infield and
grandstands fill to capacity with hundreds of thousands of people, to the
race and watching history being made, to watching the joy or
disappointment of the drivers as they climb from their cars, to the emptying
of the grounds - all in such a short period of time.  There's really no words
to describe it.

As the story of today is in the unfolding of the race, I won't be doing many
text updates.  However, it's hard not to take about a thousand pictures
(and - trust me - I do), so I'll be posting pictures throughout the day when
time permits.  One thing I WON'T do is sit in the frigid media center and
watch the race - this is an event that has to be experienced in person, no
matter if it will be record high temperatures or not (it will - record was set in
1937 at 92 degrees...today is forecast to be 95 degrees, with a track
temperature above 140 degrees).  I'm happy to be soaked with sweat, worn
out and exhausted at the end of the day the Indy  500 takes place - it's well
earned.
